St George's Monumental Inscriptions

Inside the Church

Sacred to the memory of / William Dandison / who departed this life January 15th 1819 / in the 61st year of his age / Blessed be the name of the Lord from this / time forth and forever more Amen / also of Maria his wife who died November 8th 1872 / aged 84 years / both were interred in St Mary's Churchyard / also William James Dandison / eldest son of the above / born July 23rd 1817 died October 27th 1886 / interred in Barnsley Cemetery / also of William James Fox Dandison eldest Son of the above / who died at Evershot, Dorset / on August 13th 1913 in his 59th year / interred at Evershot / also of Arthur Spencer Dandison / who died in Capetown / on December 27th 1954 aged 82 years / interred in St Peter's Cemetery, Capetown.

To the glory of God / and in memory of William Shepherd / Solicitor of this town who died March 29th 1869 / this Chancel was erected AD. 1876 / Principally through the munificence of his widow / Eliza Shepherd who died March 3rd 1877 / in whose memory the subscribers have erected / this tablet / John Scawson MA.,LLM.,Vicar/ John Wade / William Dyson / Church Wardens.

In memory of Emily the beloved daughter / of Edward and Mary Newman who died on / the 16th day of January 1864 aged 28 years.

Sacred / to the memory of / James Lister of this town Merchant / who departed this life XXJ August MDCCCXLVJ / aged LXXXJJ years / also of Frances his wife / who departed this life XXJJJ June MDCCCXLJV / aged LXXJJJ years / this monument the last tribute of filial affection / Erected by their only daughter ? the wife of Edward Newman to record the worth of her revered parents.

In loving memory of / Edward Newman / Solicitor, Barnsley born at Woburn, Bedfordshire / 18th March 1798 died 5th Dec. 1879 / also of / Charles Newman / Solicitor his second son / born at Barnsley 28th August 1829 / and died there 11th March 1886 / UBI AMOR IBI FIDES.

Window. To the glory of God and in loving memory of Benjamin Turner of Armley and Barnsley who departed / this life 6th October 1916 aged 75. This window is given by his nieces Emily Stockdale and Nellie Foyard.

Window. To the glory of God and in honour of the men of this Parish who gave their ---- the Great War. This window is dedicated by many - hearts 1919 make them ----

Sacred to the memory / of Susan wife of Richard Pickering MD / who died the 4th day of July 1831 / aged 53 years / also of Margaret the relict of the Reverend William Porter of Worsbrough / who died the 25th day of November 1832 / aged 81 years / universally respected.

Window. To the glory of God and in loving memory of her husband John Reynolds who died 19th Jan 1910 aged 76 years. Also of her son / Second Lieut. Percival Reynolds aged 37 years missing in the Great War 19th Sept. 1918. This window is given by Mina Reynolds 1924.

Window. To the glory of God and in loving memory of her husband William Matthew Armstrong, warden of / this church 1910 - 20 also of her son Cecil this is dedicated by Ellen Armstrong 1925.

In memory of / John Micklethwait / of Shepcote House in Ardsley / who died the XXIX day of July MDCCCXXXVIII / aged LXXIX years.
