Monumental Inscriptions

Section One

1. Cross on three stepped base, In Loving Memory of Jane Stuart, wife of George Albert Dyson, of Manor House, Hoylandswaine. Born December 29th 1864, died May 11th 1911. Also George Albert Dyson, who entered into Eternal Rest December 1st 1917, aged 60 years."So he giveth his beloved sleep".

2. In Memory of Ann Eliza, the beloved wife of the Rev. Thomas Morton, Vicar of this parish, born Feb. 12th 1849, died Nov. 6th 1898. Also of the Rev.Morton, B.A. for 17 years vicar of this parish.Born Jan. 21st 1845, died Dec. 18th 1924.

3. Cross surmounting three stepped base. In Loving Memory of Louisa Ann Burley of Hoylandswaine, who died February 4th 1903, aged 69 years.

4. In Loving Memory of John Haigh Jackson, of Hoylandswaine who died July 5th 1899 aged 48 years. Also of Ann Jackson, the beloved wife of the above, who died Jan. 18th 1906, Aged 59 years. (Verse very difficult to read because of weathering – possibility of further inscription at base of tablet)

5. Black marble cross on three stepped base – in surround. In Loving Memory of George Henry, the beloved husband of Fanny Marshall,who died Jan. 23rd. 1937, aged 51 years. "Ever remembered".Also the above named Fanny Marshall who died Oct. 20th 1937, aged 55 years. "At Rest"

6. In Loving Memory of Eliza, the beloved wife of John Burley of Hill Top, Hoylandswaine, who died Jan. 9th 1907. Aged 91 years."A sudden change in a moment fell,I had not known to bid my friends farewell.This is not strange – death happens unto all,This day was mine – tomorrow you may fall" Also Charles, beloved son of the above and beloved husband of Sarah Jane Burley, who died Jan. 12th 1925, aged 70 years.

7. Possible grave, but no headstone.

8. Cross on two stepped base in white marble surround. In Loving Memory of Emma, beloved wife of Joseph Hudson of this parish,Who died March 29th 1902, aged 61 years.Also Arthur their son who died March 22nd 1902, aged 20 years."Father in Thy Gracious keeping leave we now Thy servants sleeping"

9. In Loving Memory of Sarah Ellen, the beloved wife of William Lockwood, late of this parish, who died Jan. 29th 1909. Aged 34 years.Verse at base too weathered to read.

10. Black marble headstone and surround. Treasured memories of Albert, beloved husband of Mary Jane Bostwick, who Died Oct. 28th 1936, aged 63 years."In Heavenly Love abiding" Also the above named Mary Jane Bostwick, born Feb. 26th 1875, died Nov. 16th 1945."She hath done what she could".

13. White marble headstone and surround. In Loving Memory of Colin, beloved husband of Florence Matilda Charlesworth, who died 17th July 1949, aged 81 years."Peace perfect Peace" Also of John Willie, beloved son of the above, missing 27th May 1918, aged 19 years."He died for men he did not know"Also the above named Florence Matilda Charlesworth, died 28th Jan. 1958.Aged 83 years."At Rest".

14. Joseph Brook, died 26.10.1911, aged 66. Hannah Maria, widow of the above, died 15.5.1921, aged 80.

15. Charles Burley Jackson, died 18.12.1939, aged 60. Beloved husband of Ada Maria Jackson.Ada Maria Jackson, died 3.6.1949, aged 71.

16. Charles Todd, died 9.9.1927, aged 67. Selina, wife of Charles Todd, died 4.5.1933, aged 77.Louisa Baker, born 25.11.1855, died …9.1902.Also Selina Caroline, born 20.11.1895, died 1.4.1921.Beloved wife of Birkwood Sharp.

17. In Loving Memory of Fred, son of Frank and Elizabeth Dyson of Hoylandswaine, born July 5th 1892, died July 16th 1892. (possibly a further inscription at lower level hidden by brambles)

18. Small carved stone Dear Little Alfred Came to us 5.5.1890,Went to Jesus 5.5.1891.

19. In Loving Memory of Arthur George, born 2.6.1890, died 1.5.1891, 4th son of Gamaliel Milner, vicar of this parish, and Annie Elizabeth his wife. Entered into Rest on Whit Sunday, 1st May 1891, aged 11 months and 14 days. Revelations 14 4 & 5 "These are they which follow the lamb. Withersoever he goeth, these were Redeemed from among men, being the first fruits unto God and to the Lamb. And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God".

20. Broken stone cross which simply says "I.H.S." Inscription on base reads:- The Rev. T. Biddulph Hutton, for 6 years vicar of this parish; born April 13th 1824 Entered into rest February 15th 1886.

21. Flat stone, Sarah, beloved wife of George Hill, b. 22.11.1862, d. 5.11.1915,Also George Hill, born 8.4.1860, died 13.1.1940,Also Dyson, son, born 22.7.1889, died 23.2.1952.

22. Ann, beloved wife of Charles Dyson, of Hoylandswaine, died 25.1.1890,Aged 55.Also Charles Dyson, above, died 14.3.1913, aged 81.

23. Ann, beloved wife of Joseph Firth, of Hoylandswaine, who died 5.6.1891,Aged 76 years.Also Joseph Firth, above, died 18.3.1913, aged 81.

24. Possibly unmarked grave.

25. CALLY – beloved wife of Jon Hinchliffe, affectionate neice of J.C.Ashton of Whitefield Farm, Oxspring, died 4.7.1906, aged 37. Also John C. Ashton, born 11.9.1836, died 20.2.1913. Harold Bradley, born 26.12.1893, died 19.4.1966. Also his wife Dorothy Barbara, born 7.12.1903, died 12.4.1985.

26. Small stone at edge of path. In Memory of Jean Davies, 1952 – 1989.
