In his igatur largiendi et benefaciendi artibus unice elaborarit, felecissime consnuit. Donec emeritus plane vertulem stipende, et immortalium gloria maturus exurvias corpore deposuit die 5to Maii Anno Domini 1722 etates 70 Edwardis Silvester (extestamento haeres) desideratissimi partui pie memor gratissimus erg posuit.
This is a marble monument in the Silvester Chapel standing on a huge pediment in the figure of a man, flanked by two seated women, one of whom has three children. The other one hold up an empty glove. The monument was sculpted by Peter Scheemake, a fleming by birth, who lived in England between 1716 and 1771. This translation was copied from James Dearnley; History of Darton Church, and was translated by Mr Phelps, schoolmaster at Darton.
'Beneath this marble are buried the ashes of John Silvester esquire, an excellent and most upright man, for from his earliest days, he was so unwittingly dilligent in the conduct of his affairs that he was held a spirited enemy sloth and luxury. To such an extent did he cultivate moderation, that he would not indulge in the least pleasures of elegance, nor in sleep of a morning. Also in his performance of all the duties of of life there was justice, and that alone. Next is to that old time virtue of the ancients, he added simplicity. No-one had a keener insight into, or understood more deeply the character of men and the variety of their natures. Besides, there was in him no unworthy or uncouth harshness, but he lived with gentleness and kindliness, even on occasion showing a nimble humour, seriousness being put on one side. It is clear that he managed his household frugally, so that with worthy mind he might bestow more abundantly, that he might give more munificently. Wise in himself and carefully provident, he was liberal to others and unfailingly gracious. Truly, those many gifts which he made to kinsman, to friends and to the wretched and suffering, Christ, the defender of the poor and judge of all, will requite at last most abundently in the presence of the Angels. This he exercised himself solely in the arts of liberality and well doing and grew old in happiness, until, having dearly earned the rewards of the virtuous and being ripe for the glory of the Saints, he laid aside the covering of the body on the 5th day of May, in the year of our Lord 1722 and in the 70th year of his age. Edward Silvester (heir by will) in affectionate remebrance of his most lamented Uncle, has therefore erected this memorial in gratitude.'
In the register at the end of the entry of his death is written "Ah Me". Silvester bought Nether Haig and Birthwaite Hall from Sir Francis Burdett in the late 16th or early 17th century. The Silvesters came from Chapeltown and Ecclesfield district. John was Smith to the Tower of London and was supposed to have forged the chain to stretch across the Thames to prevent invasion by the Dutch Fleet. He made a chain arrangement under the floor of Birthwaite Hall, whoch operates double doors into the drawing room. He was a benefactor of Kexbrough and erected a schoolroom there in 1709, giving £5 per year from the Birthwaite estate for the support of the master.
