Introduction to Darton Memorial Inscriptions

DARTON PARISH CHURCH of ALL SAINTS
In the Diocese of Wakefield

A collection of inscriptions from Tombstones, Plaques and Memorial Windows

Here lieth the body of Ann, ye 1st daughter of John Leech, Vicar of Darton. She died December ye 31st 1703 Here lieth the body of Ann Leech ye 4th daughter of John Leech, Vicar of Darton. She died January ye 17th 1709.
This stone lies in the chancel. It is one stone, divided down the centre, with an inscription on each side.

4 Here lies interred the body of Mary, the wife of John / Leech, Clerk and Vicar of Darton: She departed this life ye 30th day of of January in the year of our Lord 1744 / In the 72nd year of her age. Here lieth the body of John Leech, Clerk A B and Vicar of Darton. he departed this life ye 22nd of day of July / in the year of our Lord 1746 and in the 74th year of his age.
This stone now hangs on the wall outside the east end of of the Church. It is a double stone with raised borders.

4 Here lieth interred the body of Mary the daughter of Joseph / Leech, Clerk and Vicar of Darton, who departed this life / August the 27th day 1747 in the 2nd year of her age. / Momento Mori / Also Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Leech, Clerk, who was interred here / on ye south end of this tomb, she died ye 27th April / 1761 in the 52nd year of her age . / In memory of three children of the above named Joseph Leech who were interred here as follows / viz Jane Leech died 21st of September 1763 aged 24 years. Here lieth interred ye body of Joseph Leech, Clerk, A B, / and Vicar of Darton. He departed this life 11th day of March / in the year of our Lord 1770 and in the 60th year of his age / Also Benjamin Leech he died October the 11th 1763 in the / 21st year of his age. / Elizabeth Leech. She died 14th October 1763 aged 23 years.
Large, flat stone, once table. This is divided into two down the centre. The two children at the foot of the second side would be two of the three mentioned on the 1st side.

4 In memory of Elizabeth, wife of John Leech of Brookhill, / who departed this life December 18th 1761 in the 65th / year of his age. / Joseph, son of John and Elizabeth leech who departed this / life March 28th 1739 in the 2nd year of his age. / Daniel January 5th 1739 in the 7th year of his age / Mary June 10th 1755 aged 29 years / Sarah August 24th 1756 aged 27years / Ann October 11th 1757 aged 33 years / John Leech, Brookhill died May 9th 1783 aged 83 years
This stone hangs outside the East End of the Church

4 In memory of Ann wife of James Leech of Brookhill, who / departed this life January 1st 1772 aged 35 years. / Mary, daughter of James and Ann Leech who departed this life April 5th 1761 in her infancy / Susannah September 28th 1770 in the 5th year of her age. / Also of Daniel Leech, youngest son of of John and Elizabeth / Leech, who died June 12th 1815 in the 74th year of his age. / Also of James Leech, fourth son of John and Elizabeth / Leech, who died February 6th 1823 aged 89 years.
This stone is hanging in the wall outside the East End of the Church. Brookhill is a smallholding across the road from hall at the foot of Birthwaite hill

In loving memory of Daniel John Leech MD; Dsc; / FRCP of Whalley Range, professor of Materia / Medica and Therapeutics in the Owen's College of / the Victoria University, and for over 20 years physician / to the Manchester Royal Infirmary / Born Jan 12th 1840. Died July 2nd 1900. / Interred in Manchester Southern cemetery / he was a son of Thomas and Rachel Leech, formerly / of Darton, and descendent of John Leech, Vicar of / this Parish 1703 - 1746

4.Sacred to the memory of Thomas Leech of Urmston / near Manchester, formerly of Kexbro who died the / 12th October 1863 aged 73 years. / Also of Rachel his wife, who died the 21st of June / 1856 aged 57 years. Once upright, now flat. Of Urmston Cottage in the register.

Edith Mary, daughter of the above aged 61 years, widow / of John Edward Litherland. / Also Ernest William, the eldest son, aged 29 years, interred / in Felkirk Churchyard. Also Cyril aged 67 years, cremated Lawnswood. / Also John Litherland died in infancy / Also Amy Bell Pritchard 2nd daughter of the above / interred Loddon, Norfolk aged 49 years.
This inscription is rather confusing

3 Sacred to the memory of Thomas Longbottom of Higham, / who departed this life January 22nd 1848 aged 59 years. / The winter of trouble is past / The storms of affliction are o'er / The struggle is ended at last / And sorrow and death are no more. / Also of John Longbottom, son of the above named Thomas / Longbottom who died August 13th 1855 aged 34 years

4 Here lye the body of George Mabson, late of Darton, / Yeoman. He departed this life Sept ye 8th 1723 aged 30 years / and his daughter Dorothy, She was interred near this place July 18th 1720
Flat stone, possibly one table tomb. A name which appears to be Elizabeth Mabson in register in 1605. George Mabson married Elizabeth Dixon in 1635.

1 In memorium / William Kilburn Maddison, son of William / Maddison, Woolley Collieries, who died May 21st 1875 / Aged 33 years / The master is come and calleth for thee / Also William Maddison the above named who died / March 9th 1878 aged 64 years / He shall rest from his labours / Also Mary the wife of the above who died at Burslem / February 26th 1891 aged 78 years.

4 In memory of Timothy John Manley of / Cockerham House, Barnsley, who died / December 20th 1838 aged 64 years.

Here lieth the body of Robert Marsh, patron of this Church / and of this Parish of Darton who departeth / this life the VIII of May 1604
This stone is in the chancel. It has a broad border in which most of the epitaph is written. HIC REQUIESCI - - _ RPVS / ROBERTI MARSH GENEROSI QVI / OBIJT SEPTEMBER VNDECIMO DIE / ANNO DOMINI 1659 This stone in front of the alter rails underneath the carpet. This also has a wide border in which all the epitaph is printed. Eroded.

In fra / Requiescit quiquid Mortale / Georgij Marsh M.B Quidom Vixit / Amicis Solamen / Patrice Decus / Pauperis Opifer / Uscori Charus / Moriensque / Ommni monumento celsiorum - - - / Reliquit Obit Feb 26th 1689.
Plaque in South Wall of Chancel. Marsh's first lived at Dayhouse and became prominemt in the 16th Century. A Robert Marsh called himself of Darton Hall, so possibly they built the Hall as it appeared to be built towards the end of the 16th or beginning of the 17th Century. The Hall was demolished (in about 1970). In 1577 there lived a Richard Marsh de Bergh. This was an early name for Barugh, and dayhouse was near Barugh. A Robert Marsh's daughter married Mr Carr, and their son Sir George Carr became Secretary of State for Scotland. Their daughter Margaret married Nicholas Radcliffe.

4 In memory of Robert Marshall of The Oaks, Darton / who died October 23rd 1853 aged 76 years. Also of Harriott wife of Frederick Marshall, Oaks Farm, Darton,departed this life September 16th 1856 aged 49 years. / Also of Frederick son of Alfred Marshall, died July 19th 1867 aged 8 weeks / Also of Alfred Frederick Marshall who departed this life / February 6th 1869 aged 23 years.

In Memory of Harriet Hirst, beloved wife of / John McKenzie amd daughter of the late Samuel / Braithwaite of this Parish, who died in Calcutta 27th / June 1917 aged 45 years. / Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord Brass Plaque on wall of North Aisle

4 In Memory of John McMahon of Barnsley, / who departed this life June 15th 1858 aged 73 years. / I was so long with pain oppressed / That wore my strength away / It made me me long for endless rest / Which never can decay. / Also 6 children who died in their infancy / Requiescent in pace. / G Uttley. 4 In memory of Edward Mellor of Bloomhouse / Green, Stonemason, who departed this life March 14th 1839 / aged 69. / Ye sinners seek this grace / Whose wrath ye cannot bear / Fly to the shelter of his cross / And find salvation there. Also on the south side lies the body of John Mellor, / son of the above who died February 17th 1847 aged 51 years. / Also Mary Mellor, wife of the above who died January 11th / 1861 aged 90 years. / Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord.
Flat stone possiby once tabular. In register, John Mellor is 53 In 1738, a Mellor of Kexbrough - a cordwainer

To the Glory of God and in memory / of / John Taylor Mellor / who died in the service of his country / at Boyelles in France, March 16th 1918 / Aged 36 years. / A faithful Clerk, Sexton and Choirister / of this Parish for a period of 16 years / Right dear in the sight of the Lord / is the death of his Saints .

4 Here is interred the body of Richard Milnes, late of Bargh / He departed this life the 9th day of April Anno Domini / 1719 in the - - of his age. / Here also lyeth interred the body of David Milns late of / Bargh, yeoman, he departed this life the 26th day of March / Anno Domini 1733 in the 31st year of his age. / In the south side of this stone lyeth interred the body of Elizabeth, the wife of Richard Milns, She departed this life / the 27th day of January 1727. / William the son of George and Mary Hobson of Machen-Banke was interred here the 5th day of July Anno 1732. / also David Milns of Higham who departed this life / January 29th 1825 aged 81 years

1 In memory of Elizabeth Moody daughter of Joseph and / Sarah Moody of Rotherhithe, Southwark London / who died at Kexbro August 22nd 1851 aged 1 year and 11 months / Thou precious dear that sleepeth here / At this world thou'd but a sean / But thy parents grieved to be brereaved / of such a lovely one. / Also the above named Joseph Moody who died in London / April 20th 1862 aged 93 years. / Also Sarah wife of the above who died August 22nd 1893 / aged 80 years. / Also Joseph Wood Naylor the dearly beloved husband / of Clara Naylor and Nephew of the above who died / November 9th 1895 aged 40 years.
Flat stone, once table, Age of Joseph Moody correct on stone For August 22nd 1893 aged 80 in register is Sarah Bedford of Mapplewell. Possibly Sarah married a second time or is buried under her maiden name

___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ who was buried Feb 14th 1648 / Here was interred the body of Margaret, wife of Joseph / Morton of Gunthwaite. She departed this life Sept 19th 1689
In South Aisle, partly under pipes, eroded. In the register for Feb 14th 1648 is Thomas Littlewood. It has been suggested in Histories of the Church that the name Morton is Burton. However, Morton is in the register for this date.

4 John Morton of Gawber Hall departed this life / ye 6th March 1767 in ye 45th year of his age
In 1758 is a Morton, glassmaker, of Bretton Hall. Bretton mentions a brass plate in Silkstone Church of Francis Morton, died 1732/3 Francis Morton of Silkstone was a glassmaker.

4 Here lies the body of Wm Moxon of Kexbrough who died / August 21st 1814 aged 61 years / Also Sarah Moxon, daughter of the above who departed this life December 22nd 1863 aged 78 years.

4 Here lieth the body of John Nettleton, late of Swallow Hill, / - was interred here February 24th in the year of our Lord 17 - - aged 69 years / Here also lyeth the body of Susannah, the wife of John / Nettleton of Swallow Hill. She was interred here ye 23rd day / of our Lord 1718 aged 87 years

1 In memory of Anna the wife of Elihu Overend of Mapplwell who died November 30th 1824 aged 22 years. / Also of the above Elihu Overend who died July 8th 1827 / aged 27 years.
Flat Stone A Timothy Overend was Church warden in 1776 and 177.7 A Timothy Overend was overseer of the poor in 1790

1 In memory of / Samuel Oxley of Bloomhouse Green, who died the / 16th April 1754 aged 71 years. / Also Margaret his wife, who died the 29th November 1772 aged 83 years. / Also William Oxley, son of the above died - - - / September 1798 aged 75 years
Flat stone. William was buried on the 25th of September in Register. He was a locksmith.

1Beneath this stone lieth the body of Mary the wife / of Matthew Oxley of Bloomhouse Green, who departed this life the 7th of September 1777 in the 66th year of his age. / In memory of the above said Matthew Oxley who died the 31st / day of December 1800 in the 83rd year of his age.

4 In affectionate remeberence of Hannah, wife of Joseph / Peckett of Mapplewell who departed this life Dec 2nd / 1844 aged 49 years. / Also Timothy son of the above, who departed this life June 9th 1846 aged 9 years / Also the above Joseph Peckett, who departed this life / June 29th 1876 aged 78 years / Also Mary, Relict of the above Joseph Peckett / born September 29th 1810 died August 24th 1895 / He giveth his beloved sleep Upright stone. This is one of a row of Peckett Stones, the others are of later dates and outside the dates of our work. The Pecketts were nail manufacturers

2 In memory of Benjamin Perkins, late of Darton, farmer, who died September - - 1839 aged 43 years. / Also Richard, infant son of the above Benjamin and / Sarah Perkins, who died February 21st 1832 aged 2 years / They were interred at Silkstone. / Also at Darton, Sarah, the eldest daughter of the above / Benjamin and Sarah Perkins who died June 12th 1850 / aged 23 years . / He hath perfected for ever / Them that were sanctified / Also Ann daughter of the above Benjamin and Sarah Perkins, who died July 26th 1865 aged 26 years.

4 Here lieth the body of William, son of John and Frances / Pickering of Armit House, who died March ye 2nd 1772 / Aged 26 years. / Also Sarah the daughter of the John Pickering Junior who died May 19th 1772 aged 3 years

2 In memory of Richard Pickering late of Mapplewell / who departed this life April 28th 1814 aged 33 years. Also Sarah, wife of the above, who departed this life / June 10th 1817 aged 23 years.

2 In memory of Charles Pickering, late of Mapplwell, who departed this life the 8th day of October 1826 / aged 82 years. Also of Mary, his wife, who died Nov 16th 1830 / Aged 82 years / Also William Pickering, who died May 26th 1879 aged 83 years.

She departed this life March 24th 1839 aged 58 years / Affliction sore, long time I bore / Physicians were in vain / Till Christ did please and death release / And ease me of my pain. / Also Joseph Pickering of Gawber Common who / departed this life March 31st 1845 aged 70 years

4 In memory of the Rev. John Pickles, late master of the / Grammar School, Darton, and minister at Bretton Chapel, / who died on the 4th day of / April 1822, in the 58th year of his age. / Also Eliza, the daughter of Robert and Mary Ann Pickles / who died December - - - - - - in the 9th year of her age / Mary died July 26th 1838 aged 1 year and 10 months / Sarah died April 10th 1840 aged 10 months. East End - Also of the above Robert Pickles, who died June 19th 1847 AE 53 years West End - Also of Mary Ann, relict of the above Robert Pickles who died January 5th 1875 aged 72 years.
This was a massive beautifully sculpted table stone. The west end of the stone has disappeared since restoration but the East end is lying some distance from the top, which is also now flat. In the register, Mary is of Barnsley Robert and Mary Ann of Leeds. Curate under Mr Wilkinson

Upright stone near Church Porch, partly buried in ground. In the register, Robert, son of Robert Poole of Barugh Mill, Cornmiller, 1799 died under 1 year. John is not in registers. Neither is the father, Robert

2 Here lieth the body of Grace, ye wife of George Pollard / 35 years, who departed this life Dec ye 18th AD / 1716 in ye 70th year of her age. / Daughter of Richard Smethurst, late minister of Darton

2 Here lies interred the body of Michael Poppleton of Darton, / who departed this life March 12th 1803 aged 46 years. / Here lies lamented in his silent grave / A tender husband and a parent brave / Alas he's gone and like a turtle dove, to increase the number of the blest above / Also of Martha the daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth Poppleton who died July 11th 1872 aged 18 years. Also of the above Benjamin Poppleton who died January / 17th 1877 aged 73 years. Also of Elizabeth Poppleton, wife of the above, who died / August 9th 1892 aged 63 years

Also of John, son of the said John Crowther who died / September 3rd 1808 in the 71st year of his age. / Also Sarah, wife of the above John, died November 13th / 1819 aged 88. / Also Hannah wife of Joseph Crowther, and granddaughter / of the above John and Sarah Crowther. She died December / 7th 1822 aged 25 years. / Also of Joseph Crowther who died January 31st 1871 / Aged 80 Years
