4 Sacred to the Memory of Hannah, daughter of John / and Elizabeth Shillito, of Darton Old Hall and beloved / wife of Joseph Goddard, was interred here / July 25th 1831 aged 30 years. / The Lord hath brought down my strength / in my journey and shortened my days. / Also in Remembrance of Joseph Goddard, who was / drowned in the Sheffield flood March 12th 1864. / aged 67 years. / He was interred at Wardsend Cemetry, Sheffield. / Death is but passing from one state to another. / And of Louise Charlotte, infant daughter of the above who died / August 31st 1823 aged 11 months. / This stone was placed here in Affectionate Remembrance / by their Grandaughter / Hannah S Goddard, Hemsworth.
Darton Hall was on Perkins Hill, near school. It is now demolished. Was Tudor. Flat rouned stone.

2 In Memory of Alice, the wife of George Grace, Bargh, / who departed this life the 17th of September 1850 aged 59 years. / Also of William Henry Grace, son of the above George, / and Alice Grace, who was drowned in the Barnby Dun river the / 9th of June 1856 aged 32 years. / In life respeced, in life lamented. / He was interred at Barnby. / Also the above George Grace, who departed this / life March 24th 1867 aged 77 years. Once a table tomb, now flat.

2 Here lieth interred Sarah, the wife of Richard Greaves, / of Emley Park Mill, yeoman, who departed this life / August ye 17th in ye 65th year of her age, / Anno Domini 1728.
In the register of the parish of High Hoyland. Flat stone, once table.

4 In Memory of Three Children of John and Ann Green / of Darton was buried here as follows. / Jonathan died ye 30th of April 1745 / and John died ye 19th of September 1746, both died / in their infancy. / Also Mary, their daughter. She departed this life ye 14th of / November 1752 in the 6th year of her age. / Here lieth Ann, the wife of John Green of Darton, / Mother of ye three children above, who died ye .......... .......... / .......... ............ ............
(Note - In the PR, for 1774 is recorded, Ann Green, died October 26th 1774 aged 61 years.) Eroded stone, now disappeared.

4 Here lieth the body of William Green of Oakes, who / departed this life April the 27th 1760 in the 49th year / of his age. / Also Martha, his daughter who died in her infancy in the year 1747. / Also Ann, his daughter who died the 15th day of October 1774 / in the 24th year of her age. / Also Mary, his daughter and wife of Mr John Stocks, grocer, / in Barnsley, who died the 16th day of March 1775 in the / 26th year of her age. / Also Mary, wife of William Green, who departed this life / October 7th 1783 aged 65 years.

In Memory of Ann Manly of Cockerham House, / daughter of John and Mary Stocks of Barnsley, died / March 18th 1818 aged 46 years. / Also of her youngest sister, Mary Garlick of BelleVue, / died June 15th 1848 aged 75 years.
(Note - In the PR, William Green is recorded as a farmer.) Once table tomb, now flat, devided into two parts. In 1804, a Garlick of Barnsley was a linen manufacturer.

Upright Stone very eroded, will soon be unreadable. In the Register - Elizabeth Green died April 12th aged 68 Oaks Farm just off road between Darton and Mapplewell Was Tudor farmhouse contemporary with Darton Hall. Has been 'improved'.

2 Susanna Greenwood / Born September 29th 1768 died May 24th 1770 / To force it from all earthly charms / death took it from it's mothers arms / happy the change, it's freed frm care / and dwells where blessed Angels are. James Greenwood died 11th Feb 1795 in the / 63rd year of his age. / Also William Greenwood son of James and Frances / Greenwood who departed this life the 8th day of / /August 1831 in the 71st year of his age. Table tomb, broken when lowered. In the Register - James Greenwood - Innkeeper

2 In memory of Richard Haigh of Haigh who died April 12th / 1853 aged 45 years / also of Ann Haigh the beloved mother of the above Richard / who died February 25th 1858 aged 83 years and / relict of the late George Haigh of East Hague, who / died June 18th 1817 aged 48 years and whose remains / are interred at South Kirby.
Once table tomb, now flat. A Richard Haigh's name was carved on a pew made out of the ancient Rood Screen of 1579. A Francis Haigh was Churchwarden in 1640. A Hague of Carr Green in register in 1716 A Joseph Haigh overseer of the poor in 1783. William de l' Hague 1408 under Darton in Yorkshire Deeds Vol VI YAS second series LXXVI. In the Register for 1705 Thomas Haigue of Barugh - A Quaker buried at Burton (Monk Bretton) Also in the registers the name is spelt Haige and Hague in 1645.

Upright Stone In the Register - Jane of New Lodge, Robert of New Lodge and Edward of Barnsley. Day house was demolished to build the Chemical Works at Barugh. It is now an industrial site. Dayhouse is marked on the Ordnance Survey map, Barnsley, Sheet SE 20/30 1:25 000 Second Series

4 In memory of Elizabeth, the wife of John Heanley / of Staincross who departed this life / April 26th 1844 aged 24 years. / Also of Eleanor Ann infant daughter of John and / Elizabeth Heanley who died July 4th 1843 / aged 9 months.

4 Here lieth the body of Joseph Hemingway of / Haigh, Yeoman, who departed this life the 31st day of / December 1753 and in the 73rd year of his age. / Also Elizabeth his daughter who departed this life the / 13th day June 1713 and in the 5th year of his age, / Also Nicholas his son who departed this life the 12th day of / January 1726 and in the 3rd year of his age. / Also Mary his daughter, the wife of John Unwin of / Birthwaite, who departed this life the 2nd day of / April 1749 and in the 31st year of her age. / Also Rebecca the wife of Joseph Hemingway who departed / this life ye 5th day of February 1757 and in the 76th year of her age. / Underneath this stone lies the body of Elizabeth Hemingway, / daughter of John and Jane Hemingway. She died / October the 31st 1810 aged 48 years.
One tombstone, now flat. In the Registers, Joseph Hemingway and John Unwin are both described as farmers.

4. Here lyeth the body of ------ ---- Joseph Hemingway / of Swithen. She departed this life on the 10th day of April / 1759 aged 42 years. / Also underneath this tomb is interred the above mentioned / Joseph Hemingway who departed this life / April 23rd 1786 aged 68 years.

Underneath this stone lieth interred the body / of John Hemingway of Haigh, who departed this life 17th / of February 1777 aged 64 years. / Also underneath the tomb on the South side of this tomb / is interred the body of Jane the wife of the afore said / John, who departed this life January 8th 1789 / aged 69 years. Underneath the stone also lieth the body of Ellen, / daughter of the above the John and Jane Hemingway / who died August 18th 1833 aged 70 years. Once table tomb, now flat

3. Underneath this stone lieth the body of Jane / Hemingway, daughter of John and Jane Hemingway / late of Haigh. She died October 23rd 1822 aged 69 years. This stone was flat and eroded and has since disappeared. A Joseph Hemingway was Officer of the Poor in 1780. 1.Here lieth the body of Thomas Heron of Darton, / clerk, who was buried July ye 28th Ano Dmi / 1666 aged 44. / Reader, as thou wast, I was, as I am, thou shalt be.

1. Here lieth the body of Richard Heron, Clarke of Darton, / who dyed April the 26th Ano Dom 1673 / R H / Here lyeth Jonathan Heron of Darton. Part of this stone lies under that of Jonathan Heron, Junior.

1.John Heron, Clerk of Darton was interred here the 13th / day of May 1714 _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ _ _ / Dorothy Heron of Darton, widd, was interred here / May 21st An Do 1735 in the 82nd year of her age. / Underneath this stone also lieth the body of Jonathan / Heron who who having been the Parish Clerk 55 years / died the 18th day of June 1769 aged 73 years. 1.Here lieth the body of Mary daughter of / Jonathan Heron and wife of John Souther who / died April ye 1st 1719 in ye 32nd year of his life. / Also Jonathan Heron died Spetember ye 16th 1722 / being 27 weeks old.

2.Sacred to the Memory of Ann Heslop daughter / to Thomas and Rachel Heslop of Barnby Hall. / who died June 12th 1843 in the 9th year of her age . / Also Jane Heslop daughter of the above named Thomas, / and Rachel Heslop who died October 8th 1845 / in the 4th yeqar of her age. / Also of Rachel Heslop, daughter of the above said Thomas / and Rachel Heslop who died October 27th 1853 in the 18th year of her age. / Also the above named Thomas Heslop who died / February 22nd 1870 aged 80 years. / Also Rachel Heslop his widow who died March / 28th aged 72 years. / Also Thomas, their only son who died October 26th / 1908 aged 69 years.
Upright stone. In the register - Thomas, the father, of Cawthorne Low Mill. Rachel, his wife, died at Clayton West. Barnby Hall is just to the right of the Barnsley Cawthorne Road near Cawthorne.

Here lieth interred the body of Matthew Hirst, of / Kexbrough, he departed this life the 14th day of May 1765 / in the 47th year of his age / Also was interred the body of his wife Hannah, the wife of the above said Matthew Hirst - who / departed this life 13th December 1790 aged / 78 years. Across the Bottom Here lyeth the body of Joseph Thomas from the parish of St Anne's, Aldersgate, London, who died at Kexbrough, March 19th 1804 aged 69 years
One large flat stone divided into three parts. In the register - Matthew Hirst, a blacksmith.

.In Memory of Ann, the daughter of Thomas and Ann / Hirst of Darton, who died June 6th 1802 aged 26 years. / Also the above Thomas Hirst, died July 6th 1802 aged 62 years. / Also Ann his wife died October 9th 1820 aged 69 years. / Also Hannah, the daughter of George and Harriet / Braithwaite of Darton who died in infancy / Also Abigail Braithwaite, who died September 18th 1826 aged / 4 years.
Upright stone In register George Braithwaite married Harriet Hirst in 1819 / a gardener of Cawthorne at the time of marriage. Thomas Hirst - a farmer

.In Memory of Sarah Hirst who departed this life on / the 19th December 1849 in the 77th year of her age / Also George Hirst, husband of the above Sarah who / departed this life November 6th 1853 aged 84 years. Once a table stone, now flat. In register George, of Bence Lane Bence House - a farm about half way between Darton Church and Barugh A Thomas Hirst was surveyor for Highways in 1796 A Thomas Hirst was overseer of the poor in 1793

3 Here lieth interred the body of Richard Hobson, late / of Kexbrough, wheelwright. He departed this life the / 21st day of March Anno Domini 1737 aged 49 years. / Also Matthew Ball of Kexbrough departed this life January 14th 1855 aged 65 years.

2 Here lieth the body of Ann Hobson, wife of Joseph Hobson / of Haigh, who departed this life the 27th of February / 1758 and in the 72nd year of his age. / Also Joseph Hobson departed this life the 5th day of June / 1760 and in the 80th Year of his age. / Also Mary the daughter of John and Ann Hobson / departed this life the 6th day of July 1760 and in the / 39th year of her age. / Also of Ann Swaine, a relative of the above and wife of Joseph Swaine of Bloomhouse Green. She died / June 1st 1847 aged 67 years. / Also Joseph Swaine, husband of the said Ann died November 24th 1855 agd 75 years.

4 Near this stone lieth Ann Hobson who departed this / life October 17th 1768 aged 6 years. / Also Hannah Hobson who departed this life November 23rd 1774 infant. / Also George Hobson who departed this life September / the 4th 1790 aged 24 and 3/4 years. / Also William Hobson, who departed this life October the 6th / 1791 aged 31 and 3/4 years . / The above sons and daughters of of Matthew and / Martha Hobson of Darton. / Also under this stone lieth George Hobson, son of / Abraham and Ann Hobson of Leeds who departed this life 25th July 1796 aged 7 years 3 months 8 days. / Short was my stay but longer my rest / God called me home because he saw it best / Therefore dear friends, lament for me no more / I am not lost, but gone before / Also Martha, the wife of the above said Matthew Hobson / who departed this life April 16th 1801 in the 69th / year of his age.
This stone once table, then flat, has now disappeared. It was very broken at the time of recording. In the register, Matthew Hobson is described as a Taylor, and Abraham as a linen draper.

4 In memory of George Holden of Bloomhouse Green, Darton, who died January 12th 1840 aged 70 years. / Also Sarah, his wife, who died November 14th 1838 aged 67 years . / Also an infant son died April 23rd 1794. / Also Martha their daughter died July 19th 1798 / aged 3 years 3 months and 13 days. / Also George their son who died September 26th 1802 / aged 1 year. / Also Abraham Hobson their son died February 12th 1820 aged 20 years. / Also Ann their daughter died July 8th 1820 aged 23 years. / Also Mary Ann their daughter died May 29th 1821 aged 15 years. / Also John their son who died March 20th 1822 aged 18 years.
Once a table stone, now flat. In register, George described as a worsted weaver. Infant son and Martha are not recorded in the register. Possibly moved to Darton after that date and just remembered there.

Small rounded stone These dates correspond in the register to Josias Howcroft, Ann Howcroft and Hannah Howcroft - daughter of above Josias and Ann Howcroft.

1 Top of Stone Wm Howcroft buried 1738 18th Dec. / Will son of the above 1822 aged 88 years Front of Stone Ez: / Ja: Howcroft 1723 / Ge Buried 1730
This is a small square sandstone near to the church porch. In the register an Elizabeth daughter of William Howcroft March 22nd 1723, and James son of William Howcroft Oct 14th 1730, of Darton. In the registers for 1809 a Howcroft, linen weaver, Darton. In the registers for 1666 is Margaret, daughter of George Howcroft.

4.Here lies the body of Thomas Huison, of Kexbro, farmer. / He died September 26th 1760 in the 61st year of his age. / Here also lieth the body of of Mary, wife of Thos Ellis of Squirrel / Hall, farmer, who died 22nd February 1811 in thr 79th / year of her age. / Here also lie the remains of Josph Race of Squirrel Hall, who died February 9th 1853 aged 69 years, / Also Elizabeth his wife, who died July 21st 1854 aged 80 years. / Near this stone lie the remains of John Race of Squirrel Hall, son of the above, who died December 25th 1859 / aged 54 years. / Also Hannah Race, sister of the above John Race, / who died August 25th 1870 aged 77 years / _ _ _ ace widow of the above _ _ 19th 1905 / aged 80 years.
Once a table stone, now flat. In the register for the last date and age is Sarah Ellis Race In the register Hannah is of Squirrel Hall, Joseph Race of Kexbrough, Squirrel Hall is near Kexbrough. A John Race was Churchwarden in 1782 A Thomas Ellis was Churchwarden in 1784 A John Race was overseer of the poor in 1788

Here lyeth the body of the wife of Richard Huchinson / of Oakes who departed this life the 5th of June / 1744 aged 36 years. / Also Joseph the son of Richard and Jane Hutchinson was interred here February the 24th _ _ _ _ aged 3 years. / _ _ John Hutchinson of _ _ Green died January 4th / 1762 aged 33 years .
This stone is on the floor of the North Aisle, partly under the heating pipes. John Hutchinson entry could have read Bloomhouse Green, the Oaks farm is near there. This building was contemporary with Darton Hall which was built about the end of the 16th or the start of the 17th century. Jane Hutchinson buried in 1744 in the register, also in the register, Joseph Huison was buried in 1740.

4 Here lyeth the body of William son of William and Mary Hutchinson of Barugh. He departed this life May ye 18th / 1764: aged 6 years. / Also was interred the body of William Hutchinson who departed this life the 31st December 1787 aged / 57 years.
Once table stone, now flat. In the register, William is described as a farmer. A Francis Hutchinson was a churchwarden in 1642 A William Huchinson was a Churchwarden in 1781

4 In loving memory of George Ibberson of Mapplewell / born November 1819 died July 8th 1882. / Also Rachel his wife born July 12th 1882 died May 20th 1884. / Also George Alladin, their son, died in infancy 1853. / Also Alethea Waring their neice born October 30th 1864 / died at Ashfield New South Wales February 18th 1883. / The wise shall inherit the glory / A Ebden sc Doncaster Rd Barnsley

4.Sacred to the memory of Nancy Jackson, daughter / of William and Mary Jackson of of Gawber Colliery. / She departed this life: November 9th 1837 / Aged 11 years and 10 months. / Dear lovely daughter thy frame lies low / lamented by thy parents dear / yet hoping in endless joys to meet, / to praise the saviour at his feet / Also William Jackson of Staincross, father of the above / Nancy, who died January 1st 1849 aged 61 years / Blessed are they which die in the Lord. / Also Mary, wife of the above William Jackson died / March 24th 1853 aged 64 years. / She rests in Jesus and is blest / how sweet her slumbers are / from sorrow grief and sin released / and freed from care.

Flat Stone A Ben Jackson had a flour mill and store at Gawber where milling wa done for the local farmers. See 'History of Gawber' by W Bretton in Barnsley Reference Library.

Here lies the body of Ralph Jenkinson, / late of Gawber Hall, who departed this life ye 11th June / A Dm 1590 / Also in ye fifth year of the rayne of of our sovereigne Lady Quene Elizabeth and benefactor of the poor / of this _ _ / I know that my redeemer liveth / and he shall stand at the latter day on ye east / and though after my skin ye worms destroy / this body yet shall see him in my flesh.
Brass plaque on the floor near the Beaumont Chapel door. Gawber Hall was given to John and Rauffe Jenkinson and to Rauffes' heirs for ever, after a dispute lasting about 32 years, caused by Gawber being added to Dodworth by mariage of Agnes de Galbergh to John de Dodworth. The name of Jenkinson ended in two daughters, co -heiresses, one marrying Thomas Cutler of Fieldhead and the other Barber of Mare bottom in Derbyshire. - See 'History of Gawber by W Bretton in Barnsley Refeence Library.

Joseph Jepson died / August 8th 1855 aged 29 years. / Also Ellen daughter of the above who who died --- 21st 1855 / aged -- years / Forbear dear friends to mourn and weep / whilst sweet in the dust of sleep / This toilsome world I've left behind / of glorious -- I hope to find. / Also Ellen, wife of the above Richard Jepson / who departed this life October 4th 1866 aged 72 years / Also of Mary Ellen Birkinshaw, grand-daughter of the above, / who departed this life Jan 26th 1867 aged 4 years

3 Here lieth the body of William Johnson of Haigh, / who departed this life the 17th day of November and in the / year of our Lord 1755 and in the 70th year of his age. Also Helen Johnson, the daughter of William and Sarah / Johnson was interred here the 2nd day of December and in the year of our Lord 1761 aged 33 years / Also George Johnson their son was interred here the 31st / day of March and in the year of our Lord 1763 and in the / 43rd year of his age. Also Elizah, the daughter of Richard and Mary Johnson / who departed this life May 14th 1778 aged 31 years. / Also Sarah, the wife of Wm Johnson who departed this life December 4th 1778 aged 87 years / also the above Richard Johnson died July 12th / 1781 aged 60 years.
Once tablestone, now flat. In the register for the date may 14th 1778 aged 31 years is Elizabeth, the wife of Joseph Ellis of Mapplewell, lathe render. In register, Richard Johnson is decribed as Inn holder of Haigh. Johnsonne is an earlier spelling of this name.

2 Beneath this stone was interred the body of Francis Lawton / of Mapplewell who departed this life April 14th 1800 / aged 78 years. / Pray my dear friends do shed no tears / Here I must lie till Christ appears / And at his coming I hope to have / A joyful rising from the grave. / Also Mary Lawton the wife of the said Francis Lawton / who died the 11th day of February 1810 aged 77 years / Also Peter Taylor, son of the above Francis Lawton who departed this life the 19th of December 1813 aged 68 years. / Also Ann, wife of the above Peter Taylor who departed this life / on the 20th of March 1838 in the 82nd year of her age.

4 Here lieth interred the body of George Ledger of Staincross / who departed this life August the 21st 1758 aged 73 years / Also here lieth interred the body of George Ledger, son of the above / George Ledger who departed this life 29th September / 1787 in the 66th year of his age.
