4 In Memory of Ann, daughter of John and Betsy Crowther / of Barnby Bridge, who departed this life June 20th 1840 / Aged 20 years. / Also Emma, granddaughter of John and Betsy Crowther, / Who departed this life June 11th 1859 aged 11years. / Also the above named John Crowther, who departed / this life April 14th 1862 aged 69 years. / Also Betsy, wife of the above who departed this life / June 6th 1874 aged 85 years. / Her end was peace.
(Note - In PR, Emma Crowther is recorded as being from Agbrigg, Wakefield and Betsy from Barnsley.) Upright stone.

4 Sacred to the Memory of Samuel Burton Crowther, / only son of Isaac and Mary Crowther, Wilthorpe Colliery, / near Barnsley, who died August 3rd 1845 / Aged 19 years and 8 months. / In youthful prime my race was run / Weep not earths sorrows soon were gone / Life's long enough if Christ you win / Never 'to' soon to be with him. / Also the above named Isaac Crowther, who died / July 17th 1860 aged 57 years.
Flat stone, once table tomb. Fine scroll decorations around the words, 'Sacred to the Memory'. Flowers and leaves - stylised.

4 In Memory of Thomas Crowther, of Nookings farm, / Bargh, who died March 21st 1868 aged 72 years. / Also Elizabeth, wife of Thomas, died July 4th 1877 aged 78 years.
Upright stone. Nookings farm is believed to be at Low Barugh, on the way to Swallow Hill, on the road between Barugh and Staincross. In the PR for 1743, there is a Crowther of Bretton Smithies.

4 Here lieth the body of Mary, wife of Joshua Cudworth, / of Barugh. She departed this life ye 17th day of August / Anno Domini 1717. / Prepare O Mortals for a future state / Repent in time before it is too late / Death is a minute Hell of deadly sorrows / Then live today as thou mayed die tomorrow. / Also the body of John, son of Joshua and Mary Cudworth, / of Barugh, was interred here ye 10th day of May / Anno Domini 1733 aged 58 years. / Also Deborah, the wife of John Cudworth of Bargh, / was buried here 1760.
(Note - In the PR, Deborah is recorded as buried January 23rd 1759.) Table tomb, now flat.

4 Here lyeth the body of Timothy Cudworth, late of / Kexbrough, blacksmith, son of John Cudworth of Barugh. / He died ye 6th day of April 1741 aged 32 years. / Near this stone lies the remains of John Armstrong / late of the parish of St John's, Westminster, Quartermaster, / of the 3rd Regiment of Footguards, who died the 31st of day / of January 1779 and in the 41st year of his age. / Also Deborah Thomas, who died June 19th 1819 aged 79.
Table tomb, now flat.

2 In Memory of James Cudworth of Bargh, / who departed this life April 17th 1835 ..... ........... Eroded but names Elizabeth, Mary and James are discernible.
Flat stone, once table top. A Joseph Cudworth, cordwainer, died in 1762. A Thomas Cudworth, of Sylkstone 1440, under Darton, can be found in Yorkshire Deeds Vol VI, at the Yorkshire Archaeological Society, Leeds.

1 Ann Davison died 14th April 1853 aged 64 years.
Small rounded headstone, in corner on north side of tower.

2 In Affectionate Remembrance of John Dennis, / of Pogmoor, who died September 7th 1875 aged 76 years, / Also Jane, wife of above, who died October 7th 1838 / aged43 years. / Also Richard, their son who died March 7th 1869 aged 35 years / and was interred at Warrington Cemetery. / Also William John, their son who died August 4th 1876 / aged 45 years and was interred at St Mary's Church, Widnes. / Also Elizabeth, relict of the aforesaid John Dennis, who / died at Bradford, June 8th 1844. / ...... .............. hear the three ............ ........ / departed this life 1776 aged 73 years. / Also Elizabeth his wife, departed this life February 19th / 1777 aged 57 years. / Also Elizabeth their daughter, departed this life June 4th / 1775 aged 29 years. / At the East end of this tomb was interred the body of / Martha Dyson, who departed this life the 3rd day of / January 1757 in the 3rd year of his age.
(Note - In the PR, for 1776 aged 73 years, is recorded Joseph Dyson of Kexbrough, the only one to fit this date and age. Elizabeth who died 1775 aged 29, is the wife of Abraham Fleetwood, of Darton, miner

She dyed January ye 26th 1688, / He dyed January 1st 1704. / Vt hora sic vita sie Transit / GLORIA MUNDI / Here lieth the body of Joanna, the wife of John Denton, / tenant of Birthwaite, Gent, who dyed ye 27th of March / 1744 in ye 31st year of her age. / Also John and Frances, their son and daughter who died in their infancy. Here lyeth the body of Sara, wife of / John Denton / junior, of Broardroyd Head, Gent, who dyed / February ye 2nd 1693. / Also Nathan, son of ye said John Denton, by / Sara his wife, who dyed May ye 17th 1695. / Also Sara, his daughter, dyed May ye 27th 1706. / And Nathan his son, dyed November ye 4th 1715. / Also John Denton of Darton, Gent, late tenant of / Birthwaite, son of the above John Denton who / dyed May 25th 1755 in ye 30th year of his age.
(Note - This was one huge table tomb, divided down the centre with inscriptions on each side. Ages were not on the stone or in the register.)

1 Here lyeth the body of John Denton of Broadroyd Head, / Gent, who departed this life ..... -- day of February / Anno Domini 1729 in the 69th year of his age. / Luthiferia facie mortis compellionur omnes / Omnici subleges mors vocat alia suas / Pestiferum luthi morbum non effugit ullus / Nequiquam docti fallere fulu student. / Also Elizabeth, the second wife of John Denton, died / the 25th November 1748 in the 72nd year of her age. / Also under the 1st stone on the south side of this / lies the body of Elizabeth Nevinson, widow, daughter / of John Denton, who died on the 13th day of March / 1814 aged 71 years, whose only child Elizabeth, was / married to Andrew Peterson Esquire of Wakefield, lies interred in the vaults of St John's Church there.
(Note - In the PR, John Denton was buried the 24th of February 1729.) Very large eroded table tomb, broken when lowering. Angels in corners of stone and in centre top.

1 In Memory of Ann, the wife of William Denton, / who died June 15th 1810 aged 32 years. / Also William, husband to the aforesaid, who died, / April 3rd 1811 aged 39 years. / Also Samuel, brother of the aforesaid who died / May 18th 1841 aged 77 years. / Also Martha, daughter of the aforesaid William and Ann, / who died July 1st 1841 aged 37 years. / Also Thomas Denton, brother of William and Samuel Denton, / who died March 20th 1845 aged 83 years. / Also of William, infant son of Samuel and Sarah Ann / Denton. / Also Samuel, son of the above William and Ann Denton, / who died September 17th 1850 aged 43 years. / Also Sarah Ann, wife of the said Samuel Denton, / who died October 30th 1852 aged 38 years.
(Note - In the PR, William aged 39, was buried in 1812 and not 1811. Ann Denton died in childbirth. William is described as a whitesmith.) Table tomb, now flat.

2 In Memory of Clara Ann, daughter of George and / Elizabeth Denton of Staincross, who departed this life / April 20th 1857 aged 9 years. / Blooming innocent adue / Quickly ended is thy race / Thee caught up to Heaven we view / Clasp't in Jesus soft embrace / Far from sorrow grief and pain / There for ever to remain.

2 In Affectionate Memory of / Joseph Denton, who departed this life / March 9th 1876 aged 47 years. / Also Elizabeth daughter of the above who / departed this life August 12th 1871 aged 16 years. / Also John William, / son of the above who departed this / life November 13th 1879 aged 16 years. / Also Ann Denton, wife of the above who departed / this life February 2nd 1895 aged 67 years.
(Note - In PR, Joseph lived at Blacker Dyke.) Upright stone. A Denton was a church warden in 1668. In 1681, a John Denton was a clothier. A Robert Denton of Derton in 1475. The above can be found under Darton in Yorshire Deeds Vol VI YAS, Leeds.

4 In Memory of John Dickinson of Staincross, / who departed this life June 2nd 1831 aged 71 years. / Affections sore long time I bore / Physicians were in vain / Till Christ did please and death release / And ease me of my pain. / Also of Fanny, wife of the above who died / February 6th 1863 aged 79 years. / Also of Thomas Dickinson, son of George and Mary / Dickinson, of Warren House, who died March 15th / 1872 aged 14 years.
(Note - In PR, all above are of Darton.) Upright stone. A Warren House was built for the then Warrender, Will Dawson, in 1613, by George Wentworth when he moved the Warren from 'The Rakes' on Woolley Waste, which was close to his house, to the Staincross Wastes. Mr Dawson paid 60 couples of rabbits a year to Mr Wentworth. This building would replace it.

2 On the North side of this stone lies the body of / George Dixon, son of William and Elizabeth Dixon, / of Kexbrough, who died January 28th 1793 aged 3 years. / Also under this stone lies William, their son who died / August 14th 1814 aged 25 years. / Forget dear friends to mourn and weep / Holy Angels guard our sleep / We've left a toiling world behind / A crown of Glory for to find. / Also on the North side lies the body of Elizabeth, / wife of the above William Dixon, who departed this / life September 29th 1839 in the 76th year of his age. / And underneath lies the body of the said William / Dixon, who departed this life October 3rd 1843, / in the 84th year of his age. / Also John Dixon, son of the above William, / who departed this life January 7th 1866 aged 75 years.
Flat stone, possibly tabletomb once.

To the Glory of God and in Loving Memory of / Captain Cyril Burton Dixon MC Y&L Reg't, / Beloved and only son of Willie and Amelia Ann / Dixon of Kexbrough, who died November 14th 1918, / from wounds received in action November 4th 1918 / aged 28 years. / And was interred in Awoingt British Cemetry, France. / He died the noblest death a man may die / Fighting for God and Right and Liberty / And such a death is - immortality.
The above is on a Plaque on the North wall of the church.

To the Glory of God and in Loving Memory / of Cyril Burton Dixon MC of Kexbrough, / Capt. York and Lancaster Regiment died November 14th 1918. / May he rest in Peace. / To the Glory of God and in Loving Memory / of Willie Dixon, of Kexbrough, Architect, died / June 21st 1923. / May he rest in Peace.
The above inscription is on a window in the North wall aisle. There are three figures, one in each light of the window. Solomon, holding compass and plan, St Wilfred of York, holding Bible and Cross and St Alban the Christian Soldier, holding the Sword and Cross. The Dixon's lived at Jacobs Hall, Kexbrough. Originally, a Tudor farmhouse, altered and improved in later years. A Robert Dixon was a church warden in1786. A Thomas Dixon, Quaker, married a daughter of Thomas Shillito, also a Quaker

3 Sacred to the Memory of Sidney Francis, the / fourth son of Charles and Mary Dransfield, / of Birthwaite Hall, who departed this life / the 8th day of July Anno Domini 1829 / aged 10 months

4 Here lyeth the body of Anthony Drury of / Schires Moor, who departed this life the 21st / day of May 1723 in the 56th year of his age. / Likewise Margaret, the wife of James Craven, was / interred here on may the 23rd 1737 aged 83 years. / Likewise the body of James Craven of Schires Moor, / who died November 8th 1763 aged 73 years.
(Note - In the PR, James Craven is described as a farmer.) Table tomb, now flat.

4Here lyeth the body of John Drury of Skies More, / who departed this life the 29th day of May Anno Domini 1742 aged 64 years. / Also of William Drury, grandson of the above who died / at Newmillar Dam October 13th 1834 aged 66 years. / Also of Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Pimberton of Gawber, / and niece to the above William Drury, who died / December 9th 1846 aged 58 years. / She was a virtuous woman / and her valuable life was sacrificed / by a ferocious dog.

2Sacred to the Memory of Joseph Drury of Skyers / Moor who died March 21st 1784 aged 58 years. / Also of John, son of the above Joseph Drury, who died / November 15th 1810 aged 62 years. / Also of Susanna, wife of the above Joseph Drury, / who died October 20th 1813 aged 84 years. / Also of Joseph Drury, son of the above Joseph and / Susanna Drury, whose remains are interred here. / He died October 10th 1825 aged 74 years. / Also of Frances, granddaughter of the above Joseph and / Susanna Drury and daughter of the late Thomas / Drury of Huddersfield who died March 19th 1833 / in the 46th year of her age.
(Note - In the PR, Joseph and John were blacksmiths.) Table tomb, now flat.

3 William, son of William and Mary Drury, late of / Mapplewell who departed this life November 21st / 1850 aged 5 years. / Also James Drury, son of the above, who departed / this life January 7th 1856 aged 23 years. / Also Joseph Drury, son of the above who departed / this life April 19th 1871 aged 35 years and was interred at Wardsend Cemetery, Sheffield. / Also of William Drury, the above named, late of / Halifax; who died March 20th 1872 aged 66 years.
Upright stone, now flat. A Joseph Drury was overseer for the poor at Barugh in 1779. Skyers Moor was an early name for Gawber

1 In memory of William, eldest son of William / Thompson Dunderdale of Manchester, merchant, / who died March 19th 1826 aged 19 years. / Also of Margaret, eldest daughter of the late / Thomas Heron of Darton, who died July 14th 1830 / aged 59 years. / Also Edward, third son of the above W T Dunderdale, / who died December 7th 1832 aged 20 years. / Also George Frederick, fifth and youngest son of / the said W T Dunderdale, who died October 23rd 1836 aged 19 years. / Also of the said William Thompson Dunderdale, / who died January 7th 1840 aged 64 years. / And of Ann, his wife, youngest daughter of the / said Thomas Heron who died October 7th 1841 / aged 65 years.
The names of the four last mentioned are remembered in the Churchyard of St Stephens, Salford, Manchester. These four are not in the Darton register. Once a fine large table tombstone, now flat with one corner broken.

2 In Memory of Joseph Dyson of Kexbrough, / who died November 6th 1812 aged 68 years. / Also Mary his wife, who died February 19th 1806 / aged 58 years. / Also George, son of the above Joseph and Mary / Dyson, who died March 1st 1784 aged 6 months.
(Note - In the PR, Joseph Dyson is described as an innkeeper.) Once table tombstone, now flat. The name Dison, appears in the register in 1700

(Note - In the PR, A James Eaton of Barugh Green, is recorded as died September 19th 1851 aged 19 years.) Small rounded stone.

4 Here lieth the body of Thomas Ellis, late of / Kexbrough, farmer. He died February 11th 1730 / in the 36th year of his age. / Also Rachael, wife of Thomas Huison and relict / of the above named Thomas Ellis, was interred / here February ye 1st 1760 aged 52. / Also Thomas Ellis of Squirrel Hall, son of the above / Thomas Ellis, died April 7th 1812 aged 80 years. / Also of Mary, the wife of George Ellis, son of the / above Thomas and Mary Ellis, who departed this / life June 27th 1845 aged 65 years.

3 Here lieth the body of Jonathan Ellisson. He departed / this life the 26th day of July 1709 in the 58th year / of his age. On the South side of this stone lyeth interred ye body / of Margaret, ye wife of Daniel Ellisson of Higham. / She departed this life January 12th 1734 in the 70th year of her age

3 Here lyeth the body of Thomas, the son of Jonathan / Ellisson of Higham who departed this life the 12th day / of January 1753 aged 17 years. / Also Ann Ellisson of Higham, who departed this / life the 28th day of July 1756 aged 71 years. / Also was interred here the body of Thomas Ellisson / brother to the above said Ann Ellisson of Higham, who departed this life the 19th day of July 1757 aged 67 years.
(Note - In the PR, Thomas Ellisson is described as a farmer.) Once table stone, now flat.

4 In Memory of Sarah, wife of Thomas England of / Barnby Bridge, who departed this life June 16th 1829 / aged 37 years. / Also Joseph, son of the said Thomas England, who departed / this life November 6th 1831 aged 12 years. / Also the said Thomas England, who departed / this life April 24th 1832 aged 42 years. / Shall I no more in social converse share, / The sweet endearments of his friendly care? / No more his pleasing countenance survey, / Which charmed the soul and smiled the hours away, / Thrice happy spirit then hast seap't away' / And left our darkness for the light of Day, / The tumults of this life afflict no more, / For thou art landed on a peaseful shore. / Also William Bedford England / born 1814, died 1859.
(Note - The last named William Bedford, is on the reverse side of the upright stone. In register for 1606 - Ingland; for 1612 England.)

3 Sacred to the Memory of Benjamin Fenton, who died / at Gawber Heights on the 26th of July 1833 aged 56 years. / Also Charlotte, the beloved wife of the above who died at / Gawber Heights on the 6th of August 1855 aged 78 years. / Also of Martha Pidcock, daughter of the above who died June 12th / 1864 aged 51 years. / Also Olive, wife of William Scholey, who died July 5th / 1865 aged 56 years. This stone was erected by their grandson.

2 In Loving Memory of George Victor Field, 13th / Training Reserve Battalion, youngest son of George and / Elizabeth Field, of Swallow Hill Farm and Woolley / Bank Farm, who died in Rugeley Military / Hospital November 17th 1916 aged 18 years. / Also Eva, youngest daughter of the above who / died June 1st 1898 aged 22 months. / Also John Field, died May 27th 1886 aged 63 years. / Also Mary Field, wife of the above died September 16th / 1896 aged 22 years. / Also Eliza, beloved wife of George Field, of Rockley Abbey Farm, born September 22nd 1851, / died September 13th 1928. / Also Sarah Ann Field, who died April 10th 1953 / aged 72 years. Upright Cross.
Note - Ffield was an earlier spelling of the name. ff was just a way of writing capital F.

4 In Memory of Thomas, the son of Thomas and Ann / Firth of Barugh, who died March 5th 1824 / aged 2 years and 7 months. / A beauteous flower rose up, but soon / T'was blighted and did wither; / Beneath Heaven's bright Eternal Sun / T'is gone to bloom for ever. / Also of Mary Firth, the daughter of Robert and / Eliz..... ...... ...... of Darton who dep.... ..... ..... November 25th ..... .....
Flat, broken and eroded.

4Here lyeth the Mortal Remains of Robert Firth / of Kexbro', in this parish. Late officer of Inland Revenue. / he departed this life June 18th 1864 aged 88 years. / Also Elizabeth, wife of the above. She departed this life / June 10th 1855 aged 73 years. / Also Thomas Hartley Firth, son of the above, who died / December 20th 1874 aged 48 years
. (Note - In PR, Elizabeth is aged 72 years.) Upright stone.

The Reverend Robert Fisher, who died August 12th / 1790 in the 70th year of his age. / He was a native of Cragg, near Cockermouth / and twenty years vicar of Darton. / His judgement was sound, his integrity strict / and his pity unfeigned. / And of his daughter Elizabeth Cooper, widow, / who left this world for a better, October 13th 1804 aged 53 years.
Inside Church near lectern partly under the heating pipes, Cockermouth, Cumberland. Presented to Darton by Godfrey Wentworth. He was formerly minister of Hickleton and curate of Barnborough.

I R F / D / LA FLETCHER died April 4th 1846 aged 6 years.
(Note - Lucy Ann Fletcher in register.) Small upright stone at NE end of church.

2In Memorium, Maud Mary, the beloved child of / Richard and Mary Fosdick of Birthwaite Hall, / in this parish. Born April 7th 1872, died June 8th 1873. / Their Angels do alway behold the face of my Father / which is in Heaven. Math. XVIII. 10.
This stone is shaped in steps with a roof shaped top.

To the Glory of God and in Dear Memory of / Joseph Fountain of Birthwaite Hall, / who died 13th of December 1904. This window is dedicated / by Catherine, his wife.
East window given by Mrs Joseph Fountain. The subject on the upper half of the window is Christ enthroned in glory, surrounded by Angel Hosts and the words, "Thou art the King of Glory oh Christ." The lower half depicts Christ as the central figure, speaking to an assembly of all sorts and conditions of men, from Kings, knights and clerics down to beggars, slaves and children. There is a background of a lake with boats upon it and, in the distance, a line of hills. Joseph Fountain of Moorhouse, Woolley, Colliery proprieter, married Catherine Walker, daughter of Thomas Walker, Attorney at Law in 1869. Formerly lived at Haigh Hall and opened pit at Haigh, now closed and returned to grassland

To the Glory of God and in Loving Memory of / Catherine Fountain of Birthwaite Hall, Darton. / This window is dedicated by her four daughters. / February 5th 1911.
This inscription is below a window in the South Aisle of the Church. Christ and Children. "Suffer little children to come onto me." One of these daughters continued to live at Birthwaite Hall until her death. She was head of Fountain and Burnley's coal mines. She married Sir William Sutherland, who was secretary to Lloyd George during the Great War. He managed the collieries for her.

To the Glory of God and in Dear Memory of / her four sons, this window is dedicated by / Catherine Fountain of Birthwaite Hall, Darton.
This inscription is below a window in the South Chancel. The subject is the Ascension. The central figure is the ascending Christ, below are eleven desciples kneeling and an Angel standing near. In the background is the Holly City. On a scroll are the words, "Ye men of Gallelee, why stand ye looking up into Heaven?" The lower half depicts the resurrection. Mary Magdaline kneeling at the tomb, on which is seated an angel, with two other women. In the distance there are three crosses on a hill. The Fountains are interred at High Hoyland.

4 In memory of George Fox of Bloomhouse Green, / who died September 22nd 1826 aged 32 years. Flat, broken stone. 3 Harriet Fox died November 9th 1828 aged 20 years. / Reader the female whose memory this stone / Perpetuates was awfully and suddenly / Snatched away from time into Eternity / She was drowned by accident in the canal near Barnsley. / The uncertain tenure by which we hold our / Mortal existance powerfully suggests / The necessity of being found in a prepared state / To meet our Judge. / Mary Fox, Mother of the above named Harriet Fox, / died 11th April 1853 in the 83rd year of her age.
Table stone, now flat. A William Fox was a churchwarden in 1875 Ffox is an earlier spelling in the register. (ff was just another way of writing a capital F.)

4 Here lieth the body of Edward Gee. He died / March 13th 1746 aged 60 years.
(Note - In PR, he lived at Skyers Moor.) Small square stone.

2 Here lieth the body of James Gibson, late of Kexbrough, / who departed this life the 19th day of July / Anno Domini 1729 in the 38th year of his age. / Also the body of Susanna, the wife of James Gibson / was interred here February 28th 1733 in the 42nd year / of his age. / Also of Mary, wife of Nathaniel Wood, Mapplewell, / who died February 19th 1845 aged 67 years. / Also the above Nathaniel Wood, who died / August 11th 1851 aged 73 years. / Also of Joseph Wood, who died October 11th 1853 aged 79 years.
(Note - In the PR, James Gibson is a butcher and Nathaniel Wood died aged 83 years.) Flat stone, once table.

4 Here lieth the body of Martha, the daughter of James Gibson, / who departed this life the 1st February 1753 / Aged 2 years and 9 months. / Also Susanna, the wife of James Gibson of Staincross, / who departed this life January the 24th 1789 aged 66 years. / Also two children, Hannah and James, who died in / their infancy. / Also James Gibson, the above mentioned father of the / said children and husband of Susanna, died / June the 20th 1792 aged 73 years.
(Note - In the PR, James Gibson is a stonemason of Woodnook, Royston.) Once table stone, now flat and badly broken.) In register for 1714 - Ellen, wife of Thomas Gibson of Ossins, Kirkburton, serge weaver. Gibsonne is an earlier spelling of the name.

2 Here was interred the body of Richard, the son of John and / Jane Gill of Swithen, who departed this life the / 31st of August 1732 aged 5 weeks and 6 days. / Also Sarah their daughter, was interred here on the / 25th of September 1732 aged 1 year and 10 months and 2 days. / On the North side of this tomb was interred the body of / Jane, the daughter of John Sanderson of Little Haughton / and wife of John Gill of Swithen, who departed this life / the 19th day of December 1735 in ye 33rd year of her age. / Also Ann, their daughter, on the 4th day of her age / of whom her Mother died.
