4 In Memory of Martha, wife of Anthony Alderson, / Cromwell Cottage, Barugh, who died / July 16th 1860 Aged 75 years. / I am the resurrection and the life. / Also of Anthony Alderson of Claycliffe / died May 3rd 1864 Aged 64 years. Upright stone

2 Sacred to the Memory of Selina, daughter of William / and Hannah Allott of Kexbro, who died / September 24th 1826 Aged 2 years and 10 months. / Also the above named William Allott of Kexbro, / who died February 8th 1860 Aged 66 years. / Also George Allott, son of the above, who died / December 30th 1866 aged 42 years.
(Note - In the PR George's age is given as 41). Upright stone

2 In Memory of George Allott of Mapplewell, / who died June 22nd 1842 aged 50 years. / Also Francis, son of the above George and Hannah Allott, / who died October 1st 1842 aged 29 years. / Also Sarah Wilkinson daughter of the above George and / Hannah Allott, who died February 13th 1851 aged 34 years. / Also Hannah, wife of the above George Allott, who died / December 14th 1861 aged 67 years. (Note - In PR, Sarah died in 1850) Upright stone
A Jane Allott, born 1815, was a Quaker.

1 Mary Archer, wife of John Archer, died ...... ....... 1718 aged 39 years.
(Note - In PR John Archer is described as 'cordwainer of Darton'.) This was once a headstone, now flat broken and eroded.

2 Here lieth interred ye body of Ann, ye wife of / Mathias Archer of Darton, who died March 17th 1718 / Aged 39 years. / Also the said Mathias Archer were interred here / in the ........ Ann° Dom. and in the ---- / year of his age.
(Note - In PR for this date, Ann wife and Robert, son of Mathias Archer of Darton, cordwainer.) This stone is flat, possibly once table, eroded

1 In Memory of / Mathias Archer of Barugh, died March 1742 / aged 39 years. / Also of Martha Archer, ye 10th March 17--. (Note - The PR was searched before and after 1742, but no sign of Martha. Mathias was described as a cordwainer.) Flat stone eroded.

1 Here lieth the body of John Archer of Darton, / who was buried 4th June 1747 / and in the 65th year of his age. / Also Sarah, the second wife of John Archer, / who died the 13th of February 1757.
(Note - In PR, John's age is given as 63.) Flat stone. Entry in burial register for 1721: Catherine Archer, wife of Mathias Kaye of Carr Green, yeoman.

4 Sacred to the Memory of Isabella Atkinson, / who died at Darton March 6th 1848 aged 37 years. / Sacred to the Memory of Robert Baynes Atkinson Esquire, / who died at Ardsley January 21st 1873 aged 66 years.
(Note - In PR Isabell's age is given as 30.) Upright stone decorated to resemble two windows, joined together at the top by a saxon type cross.

4 Here lieth the body of George Audin, of Dayhouse. / He died March 10th Ann° Dom. 1716, / In the 73rd year of his age. / And also of Sarah, his wife. / She died January ye 20th A° D° 1713, / In ye 60th year of her age. / Also of Elizabeth, wife of Robert Audin. / She died September ye 18th A° D° 1731 / in the 38th year of her age. / Here lieth the body of Robert Audin, / who departed this life the 7th of November 1772 aged 79 years. / Here lie the remains of Sarah Audin, / daughter of the late Robert Audin, / who departed this life 26th of February 1780 / in the 62nd year of her age.
(Note - Robert Audin is described in the PR as gentleman and farmer, George Audin as a husbandman, Spark Lane, and Sarah Audin of Walton, formerly of Dayhouse.) Flat stone, once table. Decorated with angels in corners.

3 Here lies interred the bodyes of three sons, / late of Robert and Elizabeth Ball of Kexbrough, in this Parish, / who departed this life as follows. / Richard, first son, died September ye 9th 1725 aged 5 years. / Richard, second son, died March ye 15th 1737 aged 7 years. / Mathew, third son, died March ye 15th 1739 aged 2 years. Flat stone, once table.

3 In Memory of ............ Ball, of Kexbrough, / who departed this life ...... .. ...... Aged 65 years. / Also of ....... ......... ........ ........ of the above / ...... / ....... 18th 1837. / also of ......... Ball, son of the above, / died at Chunard in the East Indies June 14th 1857 aged 31 years. / Also of ....... Smith, grand........... ............... ....... ....... / Also of Sarah Ball, daughter of the above, / who died October 6th 1865 aged -- years. / Also George Ambrose Smith, son of the above / who died -- ........ 1865 aged 9 months.
(Note - In the PR, a John Ball died December 15th 1857, and a Martha Ball died July 18th 1837, no ages given.) Flat stone, once table very eroded In 1643 a Robert Ball married Elizabeth Brown. A John Ball was a churchwarden in 1779.

Here lieth the bodies of John Barber, late of Gawber Hall, / gent, and Susanna his wife. / M John Barber was buried June ye 10th 1695 AEtat 67. / M Susanna Barber was buried November ye 9th 1708 AEtat 67. / Blessed are they which die in the Lord.
(Note - This inscription is on a brass plate on the floor of the Chancel, near the door of the Beaumont Chapel. The Barber family were resident at Gawber Hall for nearly 200 years.)

4 In Memory of Sarah, wife of James Baron, of Halifax / and grand-daughter of James Leech of Brookhill, / who departed this life February 15th 1836 aged 40 years. / Also of Rachel Plumpton Baron, daughter of the above, / who departed this life June 5th 1865 aged 38 years. / Also of George Ellis Baron, son of the above, / who departed this life March 13th 1872 aged 51 years. / Also Mary Ann Baron, daughter of the above, / who died February 8th 1896 aged 64 years.
This stone was once upright, now flat, outside east end of south aisle. Decorated with angels and rose designs at head.

(Note - For this date in the PR is the name George Thomas Barrowclough, who died July 2nd 1872.) A small rounded stone

4 Here lieth interred the body of John Barton, / schoolmaster of Dodworth, who departed this life / the 16th day of March in the year of our Lord 1759 / aged 31 years. / As thou once walked on earth, so once did I / For death hath cut me down, so here I lie / And must lie still until the glorious day / the trumpet sound shall call me hence away / Short was my time with sorrow sore opprest / But God has crowned me with Eternal Rest.
This stone, now flat was once a table stone. Design of Angels in top corners with flowers between them. A George Barton, schoolmaster at Darton, erected a seat in the Great Chancel where his family sit at his own proper expense, by the consent of Mr Smethurst, the Vicar.

4 Here lies the body of John Beaumont, of Darton, / gent, who died in February 1652. / And his wife Sarah. / John Joseph and Dorothy, children of Will Beaumont of Darton, gent.
Flat stone,once table, lying near Church porch.

This inscription is on a large marble monument, surmounted by the arms and crest of the family. A child with chin on hand is leaning on an hourglass at the foot. Mr James Dearnley has recorded in his history of Darton that behind the Alter are the following inscriptions:- Thomas Beaumont died 1783. George Beaumont died 1712. Also Gergius Beaumont was the husband of Francisca and died the same year. Also according to Mr Dearnley, on the floor of the chapel, now covered by a new wooden floor, are the following inscriptions: - Sarah, wife of George Beaumont, who died in 1646. June, the wife of William Beaumont, and daughter of Mr William Milner of Burton Abbey, who died in 1713 aged 68 years. Gertrude, wife of Mr George Beaumont junior, and daughter of John Bagshaw of Great Hucklow, Esquire, who died in 1703. George and Frances Beaumont of Darton, gave a chalice and paton to the Church in c.1730. In 1596, an entry appears to be ..... ......... Wife of Gilbert Boament.

4 Sacred / In this place lie interred the remains of Peter Bennett, / son of Peter and Mary Bennett of Barugh, / who departed this life February 22nd 1803 aged 23 years. / He knew in whom he had believed / His faith in Jesus was not vain; / To all who have their Lord received / To live is Christ, to die is gain.
(Note - PR states Peter was a joiner, late of Wakefield.)

4 In Affectionate Remembrance / of Bessie, wife of Samuel Bennett, who died July 7th 1849 / Aged 29 years. / Also Henry son of the above who died / October 20th 1877 aged 70 years. / Also the above Samuel Bennett late of Bargh Green / who died November 6th 1884 aged 81 years. / Also of Thomas, son of the above / who died April 4th 1885 aged 38 years.
(Note - PR records Samuel Bennett of Wakefield. No record of Bessie Bennett for that date, but a Bessie Pennington of Barnby Bridge was buried July 10th 1849 aged 29 years. Also a John Pennington of Brotherton was buried February 14th 1824 aged 4 months.) Headstone now flat.

2 John Botheroyd of Kexbro died June 28th 1768 / aged 64. / Also Benjamin Botheroyd, died February ye 1st 1789 / aged 56 years. / Also Ann his wife, died November 30th 1782 / aged 48 years.
(Note - This inscription is on the reverse of the Wagstaff stone. In the PR a John Brotherhead is described as a cordwainer.)

2 In Loving Memory of / Samuel Braithwaite of Darton, / Born 8th August 1830, died 14th December 1891. / Also Emma Braithwaite, wife of the above / Born February 22nd 1836, died 19th March 1878. / Also Laura Eleanor Braithwaite, daughter of the above born 13th February1870, died 30th March 1871. / Thy Will Be Done.
An upright stone in grey marble, inset at sides with reddish brown marble pillars. An R F Braithwaite was a church warden in 1881.

3 In Memory of, / Samuel Briggs, who died July 28th 1842 / aged 56 years. / Also Nancy his wife, who died April 8th 1847 / aged 61 years. / Also two daughters who died young. / Also Andrew, son of the above who died / October 12th 1888 aged 73 years. / Also Mary, the beloved wife of the above Andrew Briggs, / Who died April 24th 1901 aged 79 years. / Also Thomas Stephen Briggs, son of the above / who died November 12th 1917 aged 70 years. / Also Annie, the beloved wife of Thomas Stephen Briggs, / who died November 3rd 1926 aged 77 years. In memory of / William Briggs, son of John and Elizabeth Briggs, / aged 6 months. / Also Sam Briggs, aged 4 years / Also Eliza Briggs, aged 7 years. / Also Ann Briggs, aged 3 years. / Also Mary Elizabeth, eldest daughter of / Thomas Stephen and Annie Briggs, / who died March 5th 1946 aged 75 years. / Also Lilly, daughter of / Thomas Stephen and Annie Briggs, / who died February 2nd 1960 aged 85 years. Also Albert Edgar Briggs, son of Thomas Stephen and Annie Briggs, / who died January 29th 1967 aged 82 years. / Also John Arthur, son of Thomas Stephen and Annie Briggs, / who died January 25th 1966 aged 87 years.
This is one large grave with two differently shaped upright stones at the head and surrounded by one kerb, with the last inscription fitted into the bottom kerb.

3 Here lyeth the body of John Brown of Kexbrough, / who departed this life the 26th day of June / in the 66th year of his age A° Dom 1687 / Memento Moi. / Also Robert Sherwood, who died September 1st 1880, / aged 70 years. / Also Ann, wife of the above who died November 6th, / 1889 aged 78 years. / Also Sam, son of the above who died October 25th, / 1850 aged 13 years. / Also Sam Lax, son of Sam and Alice Sherwood, / born August 2nd 1889, died May 29th 1895.
(Note - In PR Robert Sherwood is described as living at Old Town, Barnsley. Sams name is spelt as Shearwood.) Flat stone

Here lieth interred the body of Christiana, daughter / of Joshua and Sarah Browne, late of Barugh. / She departed this life the fifth day of ..... / Anno Domini 1717 aged 1 year.
(Note - Located in the centre aisle of the church, partly under heating pipes. Recorded in PR as Joshua Browne, yeoman, of Kexbrough.)

2 In Affectionate Remembrance / of Emma,the beloved wife of Charles Birkinshaw, / farmer of Hermit House, Gawber, / who died December 25th 1880 aged 38 years. / Also Charles Hermit, son of the above, / who died January 9th aged 4 years. / Also of John Edward, son of the above, / who died December 5th 1902 aged 32 years.
Upright headstone with rounded top.

4 Here are interred the mortal remains of / Sarah, the beloved wife of John Burnley of Woolley Colliery, / who died September 17th AD 1858 aged 42 years. / Also the above named John Burnley, / who died January 2nd AD 1884 aged 69 years. / Also in Memory of William Henry Burnley, / son of the above, who died October 21st AD 1878 / aged 23 years.
(Note - In the PR, John Burnley is of the Parsonage, Darton. William Henry is not in register - memorial only.) Upright stone. A John Burnley was a church warden in 1881. Fountain & Burnley were mine owning partners, including Woolley Colliery.

2 In Memory of John Burton of Gawber, / who died July 21st 18-- aged 59 years. / Also of William ...... grandson of the above / who died -- ..... 1832. / Also of Amelia, wife of the above John Burton, / who died -- ..... 1834. / Also John ...... ...... ...... ....... John ....... 10th .......
(Note - In PR, William Burton died September 2nd 1832 age 45 years and Amelia Burton died February 2nd 1834 aged 45 years.) Flat stone, once a table stone, very eroded and broken.

2 In Affectionate Memory of Peter Burton, of / Bankhouse, Gawber, born July 28th 1802 / and died March 10th 1873. / Also Martha, wife of the above, born February 7th 1806 / died September 6th 1882. / Also In Loving Memory of Sarah Anne, / elder daughter of the above and widow of / Charles L Hallas of Ludhill, born September 1st 1831. / Entered into rest August 4th 1910. / Make them to be remembered with thy saints in / Glory Everlasting.
(Note - In PR, Sarah Anne is of Hopwood Street, Barnsley.) Upright stone. There should be a stone in one of the aisles to Joseph Burton of Gunthwaite, 1648 and Margaret his wife, 1689, but perhaps the lettering has worn off. A Richard Byrton can be found under Darton in Yorkshire Deeds Vol VI, YAS Library, Leeds. Also a Thomas Birton can be found in Fasti Parochials Vol I, YAS Library, Leeds.

2 Nicholas Carr joiner, buried ye first of March 1653.
Narrow flat stone.

2 Here lyeth the body of Richard Carr of Darton, / who departed this life ye 19th February 1803 aged 49 years. / Also on the South side lieth Richard Carr his son, / died 17th July 1803 aged 23 years. / Also George, son of Richard and Ann Carr, / died 31st August 1803 aged 15 years. / On the North side of this stone lieth the body of Thomas, / son of the above said, who died May 12th 1808 / in the 23rd year of his age. / Also on the South side of this stone / lies interred the body of Ann, / the wife of the first named Richard Carr. / She departed this life January 3rd 1823 / in the 65th year of her age. / Also on the North side of this stone, the body of John, / the youngest son of William and Jemima Carr, / who died July 9th 1843 aged 18 years. / Ann, their elder daughter who died January 17th / 1846 aged 18years. / And underneath this stone lies the body of / Jemima Carr, wife of William Carr, who died February 18th 1851 / aged 67 years.
(Note - In PR, Richard Carr, the father, is described as a farmer and Richard Carr the son is described as a collar maker.) Flat stone.

2 In Memory of William Carr of Darton, died June 26th 1857 / aged 66 years. / Also Richard, son of the above, died December 20th 1890 / aged 77 years. / Also William Thomas, son of the above William Carr, died December 20th 1902 aged 78 years. / Also Mary Carr, sister of Richard Carr, died April 28th 1910 / aged 80 years.
(Note - Mary Carr's address is given as Hopwood Street, Barnsley in the PR.) Flat stone. Sir George Carr, Secretary of State for Ireland was Patron of the Living in 1626 when he presented it to David Naryn, Presbyter, M.A. In December 1641, he sent John Heathfield, a missionary refugee in Ireland, to the living. Later he sold the living to George Wentworth, of Woolley.

Here resteth in Hope James William Carter, who died at / Barnsley July 18th 1872 aged 50 years. / Also Ann, wife of James William Carter, who died / February 13th 1866 age 62 years
This stone is shaped in steps with Roof shaped top. Photograph to be lodged with Yorkshire Archaeological Society.

4 To the Memory of William Challenger of Darton, / who departed this life December 1st 1840 aged 61 years. / Also of Hannah, the wife of William Challenger, / who departed this life November 26th 1848 aged 75 years. / Daily our mortal flesh decays, / But Christ our life shall come; / And his mighty power shall raise, / Our bodies from the tomb. / Also William Challenger, son of the above, / born July 8th 1811, died August 2nd 1887. / Weep not for me my children dear, / For I could stay no longer here. / Pity on your mother take, / Love one another for my sake.
Flat stone. Entries in burials PR: Elizabeth Challenger, Fox Hall, Kexbro. died July 4th 1854 aged 76 years. Also Thomas Challenger, of Chapel House, Low Swithen, died May 25th 1892 aged47 years. A John Challenger of Broadroydhead, was a weaver. A Challenger was a bleacher in 1877. There is a place called Bleachcroft, at Low Swithin, near the River Dearne. There is a reservoir and buildings which at this time, (1975) are being converted.

4 Sacred to the Memory of Betty, wife of George Chapman, / and daughter of William and Mary Jackson of Gawber. / She died May 9th 1832 aged 22 years. / Our sister is gone before / To that Celestial Shore / She hath left her mates behind / She hath all storms ontrode / Found the nest we toil to find / Landed in the arms of God. / Also Hannah, the wife of George Jackson of Staincross, / who died October 27th 1858 aged 46. / Afflictions sore long time she bore / Physicians were in vain / Death gave her ease when God did please / And freed her from her pain. / Also George Jackson, the above named from Staincross, who departed this life June 20th 1870 aged 58 years.
(Note - In the PR, George was buried June 15th.) Stone now flat but possibly once table. Chapman's were connected with Clarkson's in 1702 and with Jackson's in 1690

3 Here lieth the body of Hannah, wife of Joseph Child / of Kexbro'. She departed this life the 5th of September / 1760 aged 38 years. / Here also lieth the body's of his three children / Joseph died 16th November 1752 aged 2 years. / Thomas died ye 21st November 1757 aged 5 years. / Hannah died ye 27th November 1759 aged 6 months. / Also the foresaid Joseph, who died the 5th day of ...... (the rest is broken and missing)
(Note - A Joseph Child, (possibly the above,) of Kexbro', wheelwright, was buried April 7th 1778 aged 61.) Once a table stone but now flat. An entry in PR for 1778, 'Joseph Child, aged 11, an orphan, died July 8th of worm fever. 'Chyld' was an earlier spelling of this name.

4 Here lieth the body of John Clark of Staincross, / who departed this life the 2nd day of April 1752 aged 14 years.
(Note - In the PR, the son of Roger Clark, labourer, was buried 30th April.) This stone now flat, was once a table.

4 Martha Clarke, daughter of Henry and Martha Clarke / of Barnsley, born 17th January 1744, died 1st February 1800 / aged 26 years. / Henry Clarke died 30th November 1826 aged 83 years. / Martha Clarke, relict of the above Henry Clarke died / 10th July 1833 aged 88 years.
(Note - In PR, Henry is described as a linen draper.) This stone, once table, now flat and broken, lies outside the East End of the Church.

3 Here lieth interred the body of George Clarke of Higham, / who departed this life January the 30th 1758 aged 61 years. / Also the body of Elizabeth, wife of James Lang / and daughter of George and Mary Clarke. She died / February 25th 1795 aged 27 years. / The above said Mary Clarke died December 22nd 1803 / aged 57 years. / Also the said George Clarke died December 11th 1813 / aged 74 years. / Also on the south side of the stone lies the body of / Martha, the wife of Benjamin Smith and daughter / of the above George and Mary Clarke; She died / January 27th 1827 aged 53 years.
(Note - In the PR, Elizabeth Lang died in child birth. James Lang was a tinsman. George Clarke was a farmer. Martha Clarke is recorded as died age 54 years.) This stone,was table, now flat.

3 In Memory of Ann, wife of William Clarke, of the / Aqueduct, near Barnsley. She died October 20th 1827 / Æ 31 years. / By an awfully sudden and accidental death / A tender and affectionate Mother was snatched / away at an unlooked for moment from her / beloved family. / Reader remember that in the midst of life we are in death. / Also John and Joseph, sons of the above who died in their infancy.
(Note - In PR, John Pool, son of William Clarke, Junction Lock, in the Township of Barnsley, died May 14th 1826, aged 6 weeks. Joseph died 10th January 1827, aged 3 days.) Once table tomb, now lying flat on base on which sides were fixed.

3 Here lieth the body of John Clarke, the son of / John and Mary Clarke of Higham, / who departed this life / September the 24th in the year 1833 aged 68 years.
(Note - In the PR, John of Higham was buried September 25th 1832 aged 69 years. Flat stone.

4 In Memory of John Clarke, son of John and Elizabeth Clarke, / Oakes, near Darton, who departed this life, May 10th 1846 aged 25 years. / Also of Elizabeth Clarke, Mother of the above / John Clarke, who departed this life March 14th 1868 / aged 71 years.
Once table tomb, now flat. Oakes farm lies off the road between Darton and Mapplewell. A Tudor farmhouse now "improved". A George was overseer of the poor in 1782

4 Here lieth the body of Mary, the daughter of Henery / Cock, of Gawber Hall, who dyed 30th of January 1676. / Also Ann the wife of John Traviss of Bargh was / buried here ye 2nd of December 1748. / AT / 1852 / Here lyeth the body of Elizabeth, the wife of / Henery Cock of Gawber Hall, who died the 7th of April / 1683. / Here lyeth the body of Sarah, the wife of Christopher Smith, / late of Dodworth. She departed this life the 15th day of / December A° D° 1716. / Also the body of Ann, wife of Mathew Ellis of Kexbrough, / was interred here November ye 27th 1727 aged 26 years.
(Note - In the PR, the only name to fit the initials A T for 1852 is Abraham Turner of Gawber, buried April 11th 1852, aged 22 years. It could be an infant Traviss, not registered. Mathew Ellis is recorded as being a blacksmith.) Flat, once table tomb, broken when lowerd. In the register for 1738 is the name Cock from Darfield.

4 Here lieth the body of Mary, the wife of Thomas Colbeck / of Mapplewell, who departed this life the 22nd day of / July 1764, in the 60th year of his age.
(Note - Thomas is recorded as being a blacksmith in register.) Flat stone

4 In Memory of William Colbeck of Mapplewell, who / departed this life December 22nd 1818 aged 39 years. / Also William Colbeck, father of the above. He died / September 26th 1823 aged 81 years. / Also Thomas, second son of the last named William Colbeck, / died March 14th 1828 Æ 42 years. / Also Elizabeth, wife of the last named William Colbeck, / died February 10th 1839 aged 89 years.
Flat stone, once table tomb.

4 Here lieth the body of Benj'n Cooper, of Car Green, / died January 1798 aged 64 years. / Also Martha, his first wife, died July 1773 aged 43 years. / Rest Heavenly pair who dur'd amidst a flood of / Of persecution and adore yore God / Through life he kept you by his vital breath / And gave you victory in the arms of death / His faithful hand will guard your slumbering dust / And bring you forth among the rising just.

4 Here lieth the body of William Cooper, officer of excise / of Kexbrough, who departed this life the 29th day of / October 1756 aged 47 years. / Also Martha, wife of Thomas Crowther of Barugh, / who died March 7th 1840 aged 78 years. / Also the body of Thomas Crowther, who died / October 21st 1849 aged 85 years.
(Note - Cannot find William Cooper in register. there was some irregularity about this time.) Flat stone, possibly once table.

Here was interred the bodies of / Joanna, Thomas and Daniel, children of William Cotton of / Hague, in this Parish, Gent and farmer. / Joanna, September 29th 1688. / Thomas, May 19th 1691. / Daniel, November 10th 1693.
The above is in the floor of the Chancel. (Note - In the PR, William Cotton of Hague, died May 8th 1703. Anna Cotton, widow and relict of William Cotton, late of Haigh Hall, Gent, died July 13th 1721. No stones have been found for the parents.

Sacred to the Memory of Thomas Cotton Esq. / Late of Haigh Hall in this parish, who died / August 3rd 1802 aged 79 years. / Also Rebecca, his wife, daughter of John Ackton Esq. / of Beech in the County of Chester, who died / May 21st 1806 aged 83 years.
The above is on a plaque on the north wall of the Chancel. In 1660, a William Cotton from Chester, came into possession of property in Haigh, by marriage

4 In Memory of Richard Crossley of Barugh, who died / April 18th 1816 aged 57 years. / Also Mary, wife of the above Richard Crossley. / She died August 23rd 1826 aged 58 years. / Life was worn with grief and pain / My days in woe are past / Assured that I for every day / Must give account at last. / Also Hannah, daughter of Richard and Mary Crossley. / She died February 7th 1827 in the 19th year of her age. Flat stone, possibly table tomb.
