Dom. / 1716. / Aged 41 years and 7 months. / Remember man as thou goes by / As thou art now for once was I, / And as I am for must thou be / Therefore prepare to follow me /. Here also lyeth interred the / Body of Olive, wife of / George DIXON, yeoman. Here / lieth interred the / Body of Ann the / wife of John DIXON of Clay / Hall, yeoman, and Daughter / of Timothy SHIRT of Cawthorne / Lanes. She Departed this life / the 22 day of June 1752 Aged / 34 Years. / Near this tomb lieth the Body / of John DIXON of Clay Hall / yeoman, he departed this life / the 31 of October 1760 in the / 51 Year of his age. / Also Thomas, the son of John / DIXON was buried here in his infancy.

Section 6 Paving, south side. Flat stone with motif at each corner and a border of grape vines, the top of which forms a semi-circle round the first two lines.
Here / Was Interred / The body of Alice ye / wife of Joseph HYRST / late of Cawthorne and / formerly wife to No- / bert BURGON, she De- / parted this Life the 17th / day of July Ano. Do. / 1687 / Aged 55 Years. (Note: Eroded below this point.)

Section 6 Table tomb. Classical decoration of ovals, lines and rosettes in panels. Urn at each top corner of slab, diamond and circle border. Scrolls around 1st line of inscription. A fine stone, beautifully cut and standing on a heavy base.

(While undertaking research in 2003, Mrs Kath Wright discovered an entry in the Cawthorne burial register for GEORGE SENIOR of Barugh Green, aged 60. The entry was dated 15 August 1877. The note added by the late Miss Dearnley indicating that the stone was 'eroded' leads us to suspect that the transcription may be in error, and that the date given should be treated with caution).

Some plaques were too high to read. However C.T.Pratt, a vicar of Cawthorne, wrote a history of Cawthorne, in which these inscriptions are copied. A copy can be found in Barnsley Library and the Yorkshire Archaeological Society.

Yew Hedge Enclosure Huge Mausoleum of the SPENCER STANHOPE family of Cannon Hall, Cawthorne, with the arms of the family sculptured in front. It is now closed and no longer in use as the family has left the district.
