A History of Cawthorne was written by C.T.Pratt, a former vicar of Cawthorne. He copied many inscriptions inside the Church. Some of these stones were removed and placed outside the Church during the 1875-80 restoration. They are now between the south west corner of the Tower and the south porch. Many are badly eroded and no sense can be made from the few words that are remaining, so Mr Pratt's history would be useful to researchers. There are copies in the Local History Department of Barnsley and in the library of the Yorkshire Archaeological Society at Claremont, Clarendon Road, Leeds. The Churchyard has been divided into six sections for the purpose of taking inscriptions. Sections 2, 3, 4 and 5 are divided by paths. Sections 1 and 6 have paths except where they meet with a line from the south east end of the Church to the south wall of the Churchyard. To the west of the Churchyard is a Cemetery which has not been recorded.
