    Richard Watson, author of 'Brereley : A History of Brierley', first published in 1975, and at present out of print, has placed the entire text of the work, including recent revisions, online. This comprehensive study is well worth a visit by those researching family background in that part of our district, which was at one time included in the ancient Parish of Felkirk.

    • Collieries in the West Riding in 1896 A list of coal mines being worked in the West Riding of Yorkshire in 1896. For each colliery, the list includes nearest town/village, name of owners, name of manager, name of under manager, an indication of the market served by the extracted coal, and the total number of workers employed there, underground and on the surface.

  • Historical Manuscripts Commission
    The Historical Manuscripts Commission are in the process of upgrading and computerising the Manorial Documents Register. Currently only Wales and Yorkshire are available.
  • John Hobson's Diary
    Leonie Fretwell has provided a transcription of the diary kept by John Hobson, Gentleman and Tanner of Dodworth, near Barnsley, 1726 - 1735. The transcriber has included an index to the names found within the work.

    400 volunteers transcribing ship passenger lists in an ongoing process. The site can be searched by ship name, date, port of arrival or departure, and surname.

    Guy Etchells has drawn our attention to his Index to transcriptions of War Memorials . Most of these transcripts are of memorials in the Wakefield area, but Barnsley researchers may wish to be aware that Grimethorpe and Royston are included among the transcripts available.
