The Society’s library can help you to progress beyond the bare bones of your family history to obtain a real understanding of the social context in which your ancestors lived and worked. As a member you are entitled, free of charge, to request our librarian to look up names, places and events in a selection of local history books, articles and brochures which you think may contain information which is relevant to your family history research. The full range of material which we hold is set out in detail in our complete resources guide which you should consult before making a request. Look at the ‘How Obtainable’ and ‘BFHS Contact’ columns to check whether a particular item is part of the look up service. A maximum of four items may be requested at any one time. This is an email only service – postal requests cannot be accepted. Please quote your member number. In reply the librarian will email to you a summary of the information you are looking for and/or scans of relevant pages. Copyright restrictions apply to some of this material and it is usually not possible to send scans of whole books and articles.

Many items in our library may also be borrowed at our Tuesday evening members’ meetings. The borrowing period is one month. Some older and more fragile items may not be borrowed but they can be made available for consultation at these meetings. Please inform the librarian at least one week in advance if you would like to consult a particular item or items.

If you would like advice on how to organise your family history research or solve a particular problem please do not hesitate to get in touch.

You can find us at every meeting at the Buckley Chapel hall and at various Family History Fairs around the area.
