Our aim is to assist those who have connections with the Barnsley area to find out more about their family history and place it in its social context.
We offer the following facilities and services:
Monthly meetings at which members can discuss and conduct their own research, using the Society's materials, and also attend talks on family and local history topics. Non-members are welcome.
A quarterly journal, Domus Historiae, free to members, containing articles of interest to family and local historians and providing a forum for questions and discussion on specific topics.
A resources guide, free to members, which lists all the family and local history material held by the Society. It is organised district by district and explains how each item may be accessed.
Our own publications, including indexes of church and census records and a collection of our
members' family history articles.
A bookstall, available at all meetings and at local and regional family history fairs where we are represented. It stocks a many local books and all our own publications. The latter include indexes of church records and the 1851 census, and a collection of members' articles.
